A six-week writing journey where I faced my self-doubt head-on and ended up learning more about myself than I ever expected.
as buildspace season 5 drew to a close, i found myself grappling with a mix of emotions. there’s a bittersweet tinge to the experience — pride in what i’ve accomplished, yet a nagging sense that i could have done more. it’s a familiar feeling, isn’t it? we often find ourselves caught in this cycle of self-criticism, regretting perceived shortcomings even when we’ve given our all. perhaps it’s time we learned to celebrate our efforts, regardless of the outcome.
watching the buildspace demo day was truly eye-opening. the diversity of projects was astounding — from ai-generated music to applications aimed at social good, from deeply personal endeavors to community-focused initiatives. these past six weeks have been transformative, teaching me invaluable lessons about myself and life in general.
my buildspace journey began serendipitously with a visit to my mentor. initially, i was completely unfamiliar with buildspace — its purpose, its operations, and what would be expected of me. rather than overthinking, i took a leap of faith, embracing the unknown. isn’t that the essence of life? instead of fearing the unfamiliar, we should welcome it with open arms.
too often, we cloud our judgment with “what-ifs,” operating from a place of fear. while calculated risks can sometimes mitigate failure, they can also stifle creativity and limit our potential. perhaps there’s wisdom in occasionally throwing caution to the wind and fully committing to an idea.
reflecting on this experience, several key insights stand out:
success isn’t about having brilliant ideas; it’s about showing up consistently and putting in the work. as we learned in week one, “great ideas are forged, not found.” by committing to the process, you have everything to gain and nothing to lose.
the often repeated advice to “trust the process” falls short. it’s about trusting yourself to build and refine the process. put yourself out there and maintain momentum.
“get others to care” is crucial. often, we are our own worst enemies, fearing judgment and criticism if we share our work prematurely. instead of viewing others as threats, see them as allies who can help refine and improve your ideas. early feedback — both positive and negative — is invaluable.
iterate with others. as you progress, self-doubt is inevitable. questions like “am i on the right path?” or “will i succeed?” are normal. however, the key is to keep moving forward. life is about persistence, pushing through challenges, and continuing to grow even when faced with adversity.
embrace and share your failures. too often, we hide our failures, fearing judgment or believing they diminish our worth. however, my buildspace journey taught me that it’s not only okay to show your failures — it’s valuable. by openly sharing our setbacks, we create an environment of authenticity, encourage others to take risks, and often discover unexpected solutions or collaborations.
in the end, the buildspace experience reinforces a fundamental truth: the only way forward is through. by embracing uncertainty, seeking feedback, and persistently working towards our goals, we open ourselves to incredible opportunities for growth and achievement.
